American Gold Eagles
The U.S. Mint began making Gold Eagles in 1986 and every year since then the coins have been issued in four different sizes: 1 oz. with a $50 face value, 1/2 oz. with a $25 face value, 1/4 oz. with a $10 face value, and 1/10 oz. with a $5 face value. Gold Eagles are made in three different strike types: Uncirculated, Proof and Burnished. Generally when looking to invest in gold, customers purchase Uncirculated Gold Eagles. Proof Gold Eagles and Burnished Gold Eagles are produced by the U.S. Mint for collectors, but these items carry a higher premium.
